Celebrating 110 Years of Watchmaking, Seiko Introduces New Prospex Series Watches The history of Seiko began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori opened a shop in Ginza to repair and sell watches. In 1913, his company produced Japan's first wristwatch, and subsequent innovations advanced the art of watchmaking, including the first quartz wristwatch in 1969 and the groundbreaking Spring Drive technology in 1999.

In 2023, Seiko will celebrate the 110th anniversary of its first wristwatch with a series of commemorative timepieces, including the new Prospex diving watch. Like all other models in the collection, it is inspired by Seiko's rich technical and design heritage.

The intricately textured dial of this new work freezes the power of the polar glaciers that shape the North and South poles. The watches worn by adventurers and researchers who explored the North and South Poles in the 1960s and 1970s helped build Seiko's reputation for reliability and durability.

The case is based on the Seiko 6105-8000 diver's watch from 1968, and its characteristic curved profile and crown at 4 o'clock inspired the design of many later iconic diver's watches.

The watch comes complete with a five-row stainless steel bracelet with safety clasp and extension, as well as a polyester strap made entirely from recycled plastic bottles.

Replacement straps are made using a traditional Japanese weaving technique called "Seichu". Excellent strength and resistance to degradation under light conditions, meeting the rigorous standards of Seiko diver's watches, it is very suitable for underwater use. In addition, the strap is decorated with a special weaving pattern, which is flexible and breathable, ensuring optimal wearing comfort.

The Caliber 6R35 automatic movement has been tried and tested, with a vibration frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), and can provide up to 70 hours of power storage. The stainless steel case and bracelet are decorated with a super-hard coating, and the sapphire crystal mirror is treated with an anti-reflective coating on the inside to ensure clear and easy to read from any angle. The 12 hour markers and hands are heavily coated with Lumibrite fluorescent material to maximize readability in dark environments.
